May 3, 2022—Henniker, NH—The New Hampshire Excellence in Education (EDies) Board announced today that the Henniker Community School has been selected as the 2022 NH K-8 School of Excellence. The announcement was made at a school assembly to a surprised audience of students and staff who did not know of the award announcement.

Members of the EDies Board who attended the event included Board Chair Ken Darsney (Principal of  Franklin Middle School), Co-Chair Angel Burke (Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment at Mascoma Valley Regional School District, Vice-Chair Paul Yergeau (recently retired Principal at Deerfield Community School), members John McArthur (Principal Alton Central School)  and Bryan Belanger (Director of State Certification and Licensure at SNHU’s School of Education), and WMUR’s Sean McDonald, who has been the Master of Ceremonies for NH Excellence in Education Awards for the past several years.

The New Hampshire Excellence in Education Awards Program recognizes New Hampshire schools and individuals who meet high standards of excellence. The award for the outstanding elementary, middle, and secondary schools is determined by criteria developed by the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Awards Board of Directors and applied by selection committees composed of experienced New Hampshire educators and community leaders. A school’s application combined with a school visit by committee members determines those to be honored.

The Henniker Community School was selected, in part, for its deeply-rooted community spirit and curriculum-based events such as the Third Grade Henniker History Walk and AOK (Ambassadors of Kindness) program.  The school was also recognized for individual student goal setting and programming to support the needs of each student.

“I am incredibly proud of the Henniker Community School. The faculty, staff, and community are dedicated to taking care of students and each other.  They strive for excellence each day, and it is wonderful that they are being recognized for their work,” commented SAU 24 Superintendent of Schools Jacqueline Coe, Ed.D., of the designation of the Henniker Community School as a School of Excellence.

The 2022 EDies Celebration of Excellence in Education in honor of individual recipients and schools will be on June 4, 2022, at the DoubleTree Hilton, Manchester. This year marks the 28th NH Excellence in Education Awards. Due to the Covid pandemic and the inability of selection committees to visit schools, the 2022 School of Excellence Awards are the first to be presented since 2019.
